Quality Show and Companion Aussies

Living With an Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds are intelligent, versatile and easily trained. They can excel at obedience, herding, conformation, red merle dogagility, flyball, tracking and many other dog sports, performing their assigned tasks with great style and enthusiasm. This does not mean Aussies are easy to compete with, because they can respond to new experiences, especially stressful ones, in inappropriate ways.

Their boundless energy combined with high intelligence makes training and daily exercise vitally important. No matter how much dog experience a person has, attending dog training classes with an Aussie is a must for the first year you are together.

Most Aussies can be quite demanding of their owners' time and attention wanting to be constantly with them, following them from room to room in the house, and going along on errands. Aussies can also be highly territorial and protective of their masters' possessions, which can cause serious difficulties unless controlled with proper training.

Early socialization is a big key to living, working and playing successfully with an Aussie. With this breed, socialization is not a passive activity of an owner simply taking the puppy everywhere s/he goes. Socializing an Aussie requires active daily focus on the puppy's training and well being.
